Eric M. Bielitz

Meet the Newest Member of the S.H. Block Team, Eric M. Bielitz

S.H. Block Tax Services recently expanded our staff by welcoming Eric M. Bielitz to our dedicated team. Mr. Bielitz has joined the firm as an associate attorney focusing on tax resolution. He began working with S.H. Block Tax Services in February of 2018, but his interest in the law goes back much further than his recent hire.

Recently, I sat down with Eric to discuss his background, his goals for the firm and our clients, and his interests away from work. Keep reading to learn more about Mr. Bielitz, his passion for the law, and his desire to help Maryland taxpayers resolve their tax issues and re-enter compliance with the IRS and the State of Maryland.

SHB: Eric, it’s so nice having you on board. I can already tell you have a real passion for the law and for helping others in general. Can you tell me a bit about where that passion comes from?

EB: I think it really started for me as a child. I’ve always wanted to help people in need or who I thought were being treated unfairly, and so I naturally just gravitated toward the law. Then, I worked as a paralegal after graduating from college, and that’s when I became convinced that becoming a lawyer was something I could do and would really enjoy doing.

SHB: Yes! I think so many of us were driven to help others from a young age. Can you talk about what you did before becoming a lawyer?

EB: In college, I studied government and politics at the University of Maryland. Then I worked as a paralegal for a few years before going to law school at the University of Baltimore. My legal concentration was in business law, and I also received my LLM from the University of Baltimore. My master’s thesis was a statistical analysis of tax offender sentencing outcomes in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland from 2003 to 2013.

SHB: Impressive. But you traveled a unique path after law school, didn’t you?

EB: I did. After law school, I spent a little over a year on a contract assignment to the trust department of a Fortune 500 financial institution. When the contract was up, I started my own practice focused on the same tax resolution work we do here at S.H. Block Tax Services.

SHB: We love the fact that you have such a diverse background that also includes significant experience in tax resolution. Are you involved in any committees or clubs?

EB: I am. In 2015, my peers elected me to the leadership council of the Maryland State Bar Association Tax Section. Now I am the chair of its pro bono Committee.

SHB: What do you like most about being a lawyer?

EB: Again, it always comes back to helping others. I put a lot of hard work into my clients’ cases and a lot of hard work into developing as a person and a professional. When all that hard work pays off, and my clients benefit, there’s no better feeling in the world.

SHB: During your time here, have you noticed our firm doing anything exceptional to help our clients?

EB: I think S.H. Block does a great job paying attention to detail. We don’t force a one-size-fits-most approach onto our clients. Instead, we take the time to learn about each of our clients and their unique circumstances and then apply our knowledge and experience to tailor a solution that best suits the individual.

SHB: I think that’s what we’ve always strived for, and your work seems to align with our philosophy extremely well.

EB: Thank you. It’s important for a law firm, especially a tax resolution firm, to work holistically and always focus on the clients’ needs first.

SHB: Where do you see S.H. Block Tax Services in the next few years, and how do you think you will contribute to our future success?

EB: I anticipate sustained growth, and I hope we can expand our offerings beyond tax services. They say that good work is rewarded with more work, so I plan on contributing to S.H. Block’s growth by putting forward my best work.

SHB: That’s all we can ask of you, Eric, and we know you’ll make us proud. Okay, enough about work. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at the office?

EB: It’s funny you phrase it that way because one of my favorite hobbies is related to work. I am very active in the bar association, especially the tax bar, which is a very tight-knit community. It’s almost like a fraternity.

I also love to read. My favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy, noir detective fiction, and sports memoirs. But mostly, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two young daughters. They’re at a really fun age, and it’s amazing to see them learning new things each and every day.

SHB: We love that. Family is one of the cornerstones of S.H. Block Tax Services. Thanks so much for taking a few minutes to speak with me today, Eric. I really enjoy working with you and can’t wait to see what’s in store for you and our firm.

EB: Thank you, Stan. I feel very comfortable and welcome here at S.H. Block and appreciate the chance to help our clients and our community.
